Our Public Library
The Niagara Falls Public Library is just a fifteen minute walk along Main Street past City Hall. The Library is evolving into a Tourist Destination. We suggest that you pay it a visit while you are in Niagara Falls. In a recent Niagara Gazette article, Don Glynn wrote: "a gift shop will soon be a splendid addition to the Earl W. Brydges Library. Library Director Betty Babanoury said Thursday the shop will specialize in items reflecting Niagara's history and ethnic heritage. Pete Morrow, owner of The Book Corner on Main Street, also has agreed to help them merchandise the books which may be purchased there. (The Gift Shop is open. We have seen the items sold there and they are ideal, tasteful little gifts to bring home to your friends.) The gift shop .... is the latest of wide-ranging improvements in recent years... Last week, a new computer room was opened, offering Internet access at 14 stations. The third floor Local History Department is proving to be an excellent resource (If you are interested in the history of the area, you can spend hours here and never, never be bored.)"
Since the article was written, the computers have been moved into the main floor of the Library. While you are at the Library, stop in the Children's Room to view the doll collection. Then go up to the second floor tp view Vintage Niagara an exhibit of more than thirty rare and seldom seen art works from the permanent collection. These selected pieces have been restored and form a fascinating picture of the Falls. The Library Gift Shop has reproductions of many of these paintings available for purchase.
The library collection of historical documents and images in the Local History Department is the best source of information about Niagara Falls history. The department fields questions from all over the world about the Falls area. The library web site has an interesting digital collection available for study, too.
